The Compliance Gap

Consider a compliance officer reviewing an AI-assisted regulatory submission.

A compliant AI transparency record is a structured log of the production process. At minimum, it records:

1) Each AI interaction during drafting: when it occurred, what type of assistance was requested, which AI system was used

2) The outcome of each interaction: whether the AI output was accepted unchanged, partially used, substantially modified, or rejected

3) The character spans affected in the document

This record is machine-readable (structured JSON), auditable via hash chain, and ideally author-controlled. GDPR as a Pattern

Why Article 50 Is the Beginning

In 2018 when GDPR was introduced it was widely treated as a European compliance problem. Within a few years, Brazil had passed the LGPD, California had enacted CCPA, India was developing its own data protection framework, and the GDPR had become the de facto template for data protection law.

Companies that built GDPR-compliant infrastructure early found themselves already positioned when other jurisdictions followed. The same pattern is already visible with AI transparency obligations, and it is moving faster than GDPR did.

China has required all network information service providers to label AI-generated content with both explicit and implicit markers since September 1, 2025, under its Measures for Identifying Artificial Intelligence-Generated Synthetic Content. The practical implication for organisations investing in Article 50 compliance infrastructure now is the same as it was for GDPR early adopters.

A provenance logging system built to satisfy the EU requirement is already structurally compatible with what China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Canada are independently converging on. The specific technical standards differ, but the underlying requirement (i.e that you can demonstrate what your AI system did and when) is consistent across jurisdictions.

A detection score is jurisdiction-specific and probabilistic. A structured event log is portable, deterministic, and already points in the direction regulators worldwide are heading.


TWFF as a Technical Implementation

It records AI writing interactions as a deterministic event log attached to the document. The author controls the record and discloses it voluntarily alongside the document.

Caveat

TWFF is in active development. The current reference implementation covers the core logging protocol. Integrations with enterprise writing environments including Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and specialist documentation tools are on the roadmap for 2026 to 2027.
